Action of 5-(2-thienyl)valeric acid as a biotin antagonist
Action of 5-(2-thienyl)valeric acid as a biotin antagonist. Izumi, Y.; Fukuda, H.; Tani, Y.; Ogata, K. (Dep. Agric. Chem., Kyoto Univ., Kyoto, Japan). Biochim. Biophys. Acta, 499(2), 315-17 (English) 1977. CODEN: BBACAQ. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) 5-(2-Thienyl)valeric acid (I) [21010-06-0], a biotin [58-85-5] analog, inhibited the growth of a biotin synthesizing Rhodotorula glutinis. The growth inhibition was reversed by the addn. of biotin. Among biotin intermediates, dethiobiotin [533-48-2] and 7,8-diaminopelargonic acid [21738-21-6] reversed the inhibition by I, whereas 7-keto-8-aminopelargonic acid and pimelic acid did not. Apparently, I is a biotin antagonist which probably acts as an inhibitor of biotin biosynthesis.
Growth stimulants of feed yeasts
Growth stimulants of feed yeasts. Zabrodskii, A. G.; Pshevorskaya, V. Ya.; Lupashko, V. A. (USSR). Fermentn. Spirt. Prom-st., (3), 33-5 (Russian) 1977. CODEN: FSPMAM. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 16 (Fermentations) The addn. of desthiobiotin [533-48-2] or gibberellic acid [77-06-5] to cultures of Candida utilis did not stimulate the growth of yeast cells. When cultivated on spent mash from alc. prodn., the added compds. did not exert any stimulatory effect. Apparently, the growth of feed yeast does not require stimulants.
