(Lab. Geochem. Res., Hung. Acad. Sci., Budapest H-1112, Hung.). Org. Geochem., 10(1-3), 331-7 (English) 1986. CODEN: ORGEDE. ISSN: 0146-6380. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 51 (Fossil Fuels, Derivatives, and Related Products) Immature alginite and lignite were compressed into disks and heated at 200-450° 0.6-2.5 kbar in open and in quasi-closed systems for 1 wk. The liq. and solid products of thermal alteration were investigated by gas chromatog., mass spectroscopy, and vitrinite reflectance (Ro). The Ro value changed from 0.47% at 200° to 2.74% at 450° at low pressure, and from 0.50% at 200° to 0.91% at 450° in the quasi-closed system loaded at 2.5 kbar. The distribution of n-alkanes changed with pressure at const. temp. The formation of hopenes and sterenes and their conversions to hopanes and steranes were retarded in the higher pressure expts. Isomerization at C-22 in hopanes and at C-20 in steranes was first obsd. at 400 and 450°, resp., and was far from complete in both cases. The aromatization of C-ring monoarom. steroids to ABC ring triarom. was only partial (36-38%) at 450° in the high pressure expts. Maturation at >300° is greatest in the low-pressure system (0.06 kbar internal pressure from volatiles) than in open system with 0.06 kbar load, and much greater than in open or quasi-closed systems with static loads of 190 or 2.5 kbar. .
