The viscosity of pure RJ-5 and blends with other hydrocarbons was detd. at -65 to 70.degree.F. The hydrocarbons evaluated as viscosity improvers for RJ-5 include PhMe [108-88-3], JP-4, methylcyclohexane [108-87-2], Tetralin [119-64-2], Decalin [91-17-8], RJ-4 (hydrogenated methylcyclopentadiene dimer) [30496-78-7], and isobutylbenzene [538-93-2] in concns. of 5, 10, 25, 35, and 50 wt.%. PhMe blends were the most effective in reducing viscosity while retaining volumetric heating values at significantly high levels. Considerable progress is possible in the high-d. missile fuel area through the blending of hydrocarbon components. High-d. fuels, such as RJ-5, which have significantly higher volumetric energy than conventional hydrocarbon fuels can be tailored to yield fuels with properties which are adaptable to system designs for low-temp. application.
