DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Both in vitro (liver ext.) and in vivo (rats) (E)-5-(2-bromovinyl)uracil (I) [69304-49-0] inhibited the metabolic degrdn. of pyrimidine bases, such as thymine [65-71-4], 5-FU [51-21-8], 5-iodouracil [696-07-1], and 5-trifluorothymine [54-20-6]. I had no effect on the metabolic transformation of the nucleosides thymidine, fluorodeoxyuridine etc. to the corresponding pyrimidine bases, but increased the half-lives of the so formed bases. Thus, I, which is eliminated slowly and not by the usual pyrimidine catabolic pathway, inhibits degrdn. of other pyrimidines and doing so may enhance the therapeutic effect of the substituted pyrimidines.
