Some of their cas registry numbers are 20305-50-4 and 542-16-5 of aniline sulfate with ClO3- to diarylidoquinone (II), catalyzed by Fe3+, activated by trace V5+, and inhibited by I, was used as indicator reaction. The change of the reaction rate at pH 2.9 was followed spectrophotometrically by measuring the absorbance of II at 415 nm (molar absorptivity 1.0 .times. 104). The ionic strength was adjusted to 0.6M with Na2SO4. The method is based on the formation of relatively stable protonated Fe-I complexes with negligible catalytic activity. Thus, only after the end point, when all I was complexed, was a sharp increase in the reaction rate obsd., caused by the formation of intermediate Fe-V complexes, such as Fe2OHVO2 with high catalytic activity. The error was .apprx.6%. The conditional catalytic consts., stability consts., and acidity characteristic coeffs. of V-I, Fe-I, and Fe-V intermediate complexes were calcd. .
