DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Radical polymn. of N,N-diethylthiomethacrylamide (I) [66756-94-3], prepd. by sulfuration of N,N-diethylmethacrylamide [5441-99-6] with Lawesson's reagent [19172-47-5], gave a 10% yield of homopolymer [96387-42-7]. The radical polymn. of a 1:8 mixt. of I and styrene gave a copolymer [86689-15-8] contg. 2.5% thioamide group. S-Alkylation of this polymer with Et3O+BF4- [368-39-8] and reaction of the unisolated immonium salt with H2S gave Et dithiomethacrylate-styrene copolymer. A similar reaction with BrCH2CO2H [79-08-3] gave carboxymethyl dithiomethacrylate-styrene copolymer. UV spectrometry showed the conversions to be quant., and no crosslinking occurred.
