DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) The inhibitory effects of benzylpenicillin procaine [6130-64-9] and dihydrostreptomycin sulfate [5490-27-7], alone and in combination, against over 200 strains of Staphylococcus aureus indicated significant synergy between these 2 antibiotics. This explains the excellent therapeutic effect reported for the treatment of staphylococcal mastitis with combinations of benzylpenicillin and dihydrostreptomycin. Although many of the isolates were resistant to benzylpenicillin and(or) dihydrostreptomycin, the synergistic effect was evident even with organisms resistant to both antibiotics. .

Signals corresponding to various protons in the antibiotics were identified by chem. shift and spin-spin coupling measurements. Structural proof for these antibiotics is given based on NMR measurements. .
