APPLICATION: US 84-617585 5 Jun 1984. PRIORITY: US 83-491657 5 May 1983. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 62 (Essential Oils and Cosmetics) Section cross-reference(s): 25, 46 Phenylalkanol esters I (R = Me, Et, or optical isomers) are prepd. by hydrogenation of 4-methyl-3,4-dihydro-1H-2-benzopyran (II) [26164-08-9] and esterification of the resulting alcs. with acyl halide or acyl anhydrides. I alone or a combination with one or more butanoylcyclohexane derivs. and/or 3-methyl-1-phenyl-5-pentanol [55066-48-3] shows organoleptic effects to enhance the aroma of perfume compns., colognes and perfumed articles such as detergents and fabric softeners. The effective amt. of compns. contg. I are 0.01-10% of fragrance components in perfumed products. Thus, II was hydrogenated to give 2-MeC6H4CHMeCH2OH [62835-97-6]. Bulked fractions from a distn. column which had an extremely strong aroma, and Ac2O were refluxed to obtain methylhydratropic acetate (I, R = Me) (III) [98094-78-1]. A rose formulation contg. 30 parts (wt.) III and other ingredients showed an intense green, rose, flora aroma with hyacinth, peony and lilac topnotes and anise-like undertones and was richer on dryout compared to the same formulation without III.
