- Effect of lithium on the serotonin and kinurenin pathways of tryptophan metabolism
- Effect of lithium on the serotonin and kinurenin pathways of tryptophan metabolism. Kiseleva, I. P.; Lapin, I. P.; Prakh'e, I. V.; Samsonova, M. L.; Khaunina, R. A. (Leningr. Nauchno-Issled. Psikhonevrol. Inst. im. Bekhtereva, Leningrad, USSR). Zh. Nevropatol. Psikhiatr. im. S. S. Korsakova, 77(8), 1188-91 (Russian) 1977. CODEN: ZNPIAP. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) Li2CO3 [554-13-2] (50-100 mg/kg) injected i.p. into rats increased liver tryptophan pyrrolase [9014-51-1] activity 50-80% 5 h postadministration; it had no effect at 1, 3, or 20 h postadministration. The same doses of Li2CO3 increased plasma 11-hydroxycorticosteroids 2.5-fold; this effect was prevented by pretreatment with dexamethasone. Li2CO3 at 50 mg/kg/day for 10 days had no effect on the liver enzymes or plasma corticosteroids. Apparently, the increase in tryptophan pyrrolase activity caused by Li is moderated by an increase in plasma corticosteroid.

- Experimental study of the emotiotropic effect of lithium: ambivalent dose-related effect during reserpine-induced depression and the preventive antistress effect. Baru, A. M.; Sedykh, L. I.; Kholodnyi, Yu. G. (Khar'k. Nauchno-Issled. Inst. Nevrol. Psikhiatr., Kharkov, USSR). Zh. Nevropatol. Psikhiatr. im. S. S. Korsakova, 77(8), 1201-7 (Russian) 1977. CODEN: ZNPIAP. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) LiiCO3 [554-13-2] (10 or 50 mg/kg/day) given orally to rats for 14-70 days did not affect adrenaline [51-43-4] or noradrenaline [51-41-2] levels in the brain, heart, or adrenal glands. The 10 mg/kg/day dose prevented reserpine [50-55-5] induced increases in adrenaline excretion and decreases in noradrenaline excretion, the higher dose had no effect on or potentiated the reserpine effects. Th lower Li dose also inhibited depression caused by reserpine, whereas the higher dose potentiated it. Relation between the behavioral and biochem. effects of Li are discussed.
