DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 36 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Esters and amides of 2,4,6-trialkyl-3-hydroxyphenylalkanoic acids were prepd. and used as stabilizers against deterioration by oxidn., heat, and UV light in plastics, rubbers, and oils. A soln. of 97.2 g 6-tert-butyl-3-chloromethyl-2,4-dimethylphenol [23500-79-0] was added to a dispersion of 41 g KCN [151-50-8] in 300 ml DMF at 25-35.degree. the mixt. was heated 7.5 h at 70-5.degree.. An addnl. 13.7 g KCN was added and heating continued 2 h at 60-5.degree. to give 4-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethyl-3-hydroxyphenylacetonitrile (I) [55699-10-0] m. 134-9.degree.. I (65.1 g) was hydrolyzed at 116-17.degree. in ethylene glycol and water contg. NaOH to give 4-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethyl-3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (II) [55699-12-2] m. 165-7.degree. 9003-53-6 and 23500-79-0 are also in the experiment.. I (43.4 g) was esterified with MeOH to give Me 4-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethyl-3-hydroxyphenylacetate [55698-89-0] which was transesterified with 1,1,1-trimethylolethane [77-85-0] to give neopentanetriyl tris(4-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethyl-3-hydroxyphenylacetate) (II) [55698-90-3] m. 165-7.degree.. Polypropylene [9003-07-0] was blended 10 min at 182.degree. with 0.1% III and 0.3% distearyl .beta.-thiodipropionate and a molded sheet 0.635 m thick was exposed at 150.degree. in a forced draft oven for 1680 h before signs of decompn. occurred. A sheet contg. no stabilizer showed decompn. after 3 h. .
