DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Toxins 496 (I) [56709-26-3] and T544 (II) [56678-09-2] were isolated from dried K. humboldtiana fruit, and injected in sesame oil into the rat sciatic nerve. Within 3-4 days, oil droplets which probably contained the toxins were obsd. in cytoplasm of Schwann cells with intact myelin sheaths, and at 5-6 days flaccid paresis in the limbs occurred along with segmental demyclination of the larger nerve fibers. Max. paresis was obsd. by day 10-20 depending on dose. I produced more severe paresis than comparable doses of II. The findings suggest that the I and II have a primary action on Schwann cell metab.
