The plasma and liver vitamin A [11103-57-4] were only slightly increased at weaning at an age of 4 wk and 3 wk after weaning. An i.m. injection of Axerophthol + 300 mg Erevit (tocopheryl acetate) [58-95-7] at weaning did not have a pos. effect on growth or health. Vitamin A increased in the liver but not in circulation, and the decrease in tocopherolemia, caused by reduced feed intake after weaning, was not prevented. Oral administration of 1 mL Axetocal (30 mg retinol + 30 mg tocopheryl acetate + 100,000 IU ergocalciferol/1 mL oil) [51910-58-8]/pig at an age of 53 days raised the plasma vitamin E [1406-18-4] and the liver and plasma vitamin A more than did an i.m. injection. The preventive injections of vitamin A and E to piglets did not increase the economic profits when the sows and piglets were fed with the current complete mixts. The problems of supplying vitamin E to weaned piglets are discussed.
