DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 46 (Surface Active Agents and Detergents) Alkoxylates prepd. by the reaction of 1 mol lactitol [585-86-4] with 10 mol propylene oxide [75-56-9] or ethylene oxide [75-21-8] were transesterified with Me esters of C12-18 fatty acids to prep. long-chain ether-esters of lactitol which were more sol. in water, had improved lime soap dispersibility, and, in some cases, had better emulsifying properties, compared with related lactitol derivs. prepd. by transesterification prior to alkoxylation.

The reactions were conducted in water-PhMe mixts. contg. ~40% NaOH and Bu4NCl [1112-67-0] as a phase-transfer catalyst. The temp. was maintained at 0°, with BzCl [98-88-4]-sugar mol ratios 0.5-9. The products, by analogy to sucrose benzoate, could find application in coating materials.
