Cariogenicity of nine sugars tested with an intraoral device in man
Cariogenicity of nine sugars tested with an intraoral device in man. Koulourides, T.; Bodden, R.; Keller, S.; Manson-Hing, L.; Lastra, J.; Housch, T. (Sch. Dent., Univ. Alabama, Birmingham, Ala., USA). Caries Res., 10(6), 427-41 (English) 1976. CODEN: CAREBK. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Section cross-reference(s): 14 Nine sugars and sugar alcs. were assessed for their effect on exptl. caries with an Intraoral Cariogenicity Test (ICT). Sample bovine enamel surfaces were submitted to simulated cariogenic conditions in the human mouth. The extent of exptl. cariogenesis after 1 week was measured by means of surface microhardness tests on enamel samples. Each test sugar was compared to sucrose control, and supplied to one of the two ICT plaques at the same time. There was no detectable difference in the effect of glucose [50-99-7], fructose [57-48-7], and raffinose [512-69-6] on ICT cariogenesis. Lactose [63-42-3], mannitol [69-65-8], melibiose [585-99-9], and sorbitol [50-70-4] were significantly less cariogenic than sucrose (p<0.05), while xylose [58-86-6] and xylitol [87-99-0] were noncariogenic.Except for chemicals metioned above, 58-86-6 and 69-65-8 are also used. .
Effect of galactose containing disaccharides and trisaccharides on hepatic enzyme response in starved-refed rats
Effect of galactose containing disaccharides and trisaccharides on hepatic enzyme response in starved-refed rats. Michaelis, O. E., IV; Szepesi, B. (Nutr. Inst., ARS, Beltsville, Md., USA). Nutr. Rep. Int., 14(5), 553-9 (English) 1976. CODEN: NURIBL. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Male Wistar rats were starved and refed diets contg. 30 or 20% glucose [50-99-7]-D-galactose [59-23-4] glycosidic sequences as either disaccharides (.alpha. 9045-77-6 and 512-69-6 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. [14641-93-1] and .beta.-lactose [5965-66-2], melibiose [585-99-9]) or trisaccharide (raffinose [512-69-6]) or their disaccharide and monosaccharide equivs. The activities of hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) [9001-40-5], malic enzyme (ME) [9028-47-1], fatty acid synthetase (FAS) [9045-77-6] and changes in relative liver size (RLS) to refeeding of the different sugars were studied. After refeeding of lactose, melibiose, or raffinose diets, food intake, the activities of all enzymes measured (G6PD, ME, and FAS) and RLS were lower than after refeeding of the monosaccharide equiv. diets even though adequate amts. of supplemental glucose were included in the diets. The depressed lipogenic response to refeeding of the glucose-galactose disaccharide sequences appeared to be due to poor digestibility of the carbohydrates by the rat. The results demonstrate that a valid test for the disaccharide effect with glucose-galactose disaccharide sequences cannot be performed with adult rats. .
