DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Hormone Pharmacology) Marked regional and only small species differences were found for the inhibition of GABA [56-12-2] and .beta.-alanine [107-95-9] uptake in cat and rat central nervous system tissue by (+)-2,4-diaminobutyrate [60484-56-2], (-)- [25137-00-2] and (+)-nipecotate [59045-82-8], and 2,2-dimethyl-.beta.-alanine [19036-43-2]. E.g., 50% inhibition of .beta.-alanine uptake in cat cerebellum and spinal cord required 68 and 11.mu.M (-)-nipecotate, resp.; the corresponding values for rat tissues were 59 and 15.mu.M, resp. At 10-3M, .beta.-alanine inhibited GABA uptake in cat and rat spinal tissue by 27 and 49%, resp., but had no effect on uptake in cerebral cortex. Uptake processes may limit the effectiveness of GABA and .beta.-alanine as neuronal depressants. .
