DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 59 (Air Pollution and Industrial Hygiene) Oxidn. of trimethylarsine [593-88-4] and trimethystibine [594-10-5] by atm. O and other reagents is examd., and semiquant. rate consts. are calcd. In MeOH soln. the rate const. for reaction of dissolved O with Me3Sb is >10-2 M-1 s-1, whereas for the oxidn. of Me3As, the rate consts. are estd. as 103 and 10-6 M-1 s-1 for reaction of Me3Sb and Me3As, resp., with O. A scheme based on PMR evidence for reactive intermediates is suggested to account for the products of oxidn., Me3EO and Me2EO2H of these compds., E = Sb, As. From these results, even if biol. methylation of Sb occurs in nature analogous to that of As, the rapidity with which Me3Sb is oxidized would probably prevent hazardous concns. from building up in aerated surroundings.
