Chemistry and chemical ecology of the Bahamian sponge Aplysilla glacialis
Chemistry and chemical ecology of the Bahamian sponge Aplysilla glacialis. Bobzin, Steven C.; Faulkner, D. John (Scripps Inst. Oceanogr., Univ. California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093-0212, USA). J. Chem. Ecol., 18(3), 309-32 (English) 1992. CODEN: JCECD8. ISSN: 0098-0331. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 12 (Nonmammalian Biochemistry) Chem. investigation of the secondary metabolites of the marine sponge A. glacialis collected at French Wells, Crooked Island, Bahamas, resulted in the isolation and characterization of four diterpenes, two sterol endoperoxides, and two methylated primary metabolites. Some of these compds., along with crude exts. of the sponge, were investigated for their ability to deter fish predation, affect the fouling of surfaces, and inhibit the growth of marine microorganisms. The diterpene manool (I), cholesterol endoperoxide (II), and the crude nonpolar ext. of A. glacialis were shown to deter feeding by a natural assemblage of fish predators in an in situ assay conducted at French Wells. Pure secondary metabolites and crude exts. of A. glacialis also were tested in a lab. 141116-13-4 and 596-85-0 are also in the experiment. fish feeding assay employing the wrasse Thalassoma lunare. A mixt. of sterol endoperoxides were isolated from the mucus that coats the surface of A. glacialis and is exuded in large quantities when the sponge is disturbed. These compds. are thereby distributed in a manner in which they can best serve a defensive role for the sponge. An in situ assay was designed to det. the effect that pure secondary metabolites and crude exts. have on the fouling of surfaces. I and II were detd. to increase the rate of fouling when compared to control surfaces. 1-Methyladenine was identified as an antimicrobial constituent of A. glacialis that inhibited the growth of four marine bacteria isolated from seawater samples collected at French Wells. .
Oxidative rearrangements of tertiary and some secondary allylic alcohols with chromium(VI) reagents
Oxidative rearrangements of tertiary and some secondary allylic alcohols with chromium(VI) reagents. A new method for 1,3-functional group transposition and forming mixed aldol products. Sundararaman, Padmanabhan; Herz, Werner (Dep. Chem., Florida State Univ., Tallahassee, Fla., USA). J. Org. Chem., 42(5), 813-19 (English) 1977. CODEN: JOCEAH. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 30 (Terpenoids) Oxidn. of tertiary allylic and some secondary allylic alcs. with Collins reagent resulted in oxidative rearrangement to .alpha.-epxoy aldehydes or ketones. Similar oxidn. with pyridinium chlorochromate gave . 61116-82-3 and 596-85-0 which are cas registry numbers of chemicals are mentioned.alpha.,.beta.-unsatd. aldehydes or ketones. A mechanism for the oxidative rearrangement of labda-8(17),12-dien-14-ol with Cr(VI) reagents was proposed. .
