Radiation-curable abrasion-resistant coatings based on pentaerythritol and trimethylolpropane triacrylates
Radiation-curable abrasion-resistant coatings based on pentaerythritol and trimethylolpropane triacrylates. Tu, R. S. (Ampex Corp., Redwood City, CA, USA). Paintindia, 33(8), 18-24 (English) 1983. CODEN: PANTAH. ISSN: 0556-4409. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 42 (Coatings, Inks, and Related Products) The utility of reactive diluents [N-vinylpyrrolidone (I) [88-12-0], N-vinylcaprolactam [2235-00-9]] in UV-curable, optically clear, abrasion-resistant, solventless coatings contg. the title acrylates is discussed. Viscosity at 25°, curing rate of ~0.5-mil films in air by two 200-W/in Hg lamps, acetone resistance, abrasion resistance (Du Pont Steel Wool Rotary Test), and shelf life are considered.Several substances with their cas registry numbers 22499-12-3 and 86481-92-7 may be metioned in this study.. The most effective photoinitiator was Sandoray 1000 (p-phenoxydichloroacetophenone) [59867-68-4]. The optimal viscosity (99 cP), curing rate (100 ft/min), and abrasion resistance (haze grain 0.8) were otained with Sandoray 5, pentaerythritol triacrylate [3524-68-3] 79.3, and I 20.7%. The curing rate of this compn. was higher than that of triacrylates-monoacrylate compns. .
Photoinitiators and their influence on color development in UV cured films
Photoinitiators and their influence on color development in UV cured films. Schmid, Steven R. (DeSoto Inc., Des Plaines, IL, USA). J. Radiat. Curing, 11(2), 19-23 (English) 1984. CODEN: JRDCA3. ISSN: 0361-6428. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 42 (Coatings, Inks, and Related Products) The theory of photoinitiation of UV-cured coatings and the prevention of post-cure discoloration of thin, clear UV-cured films by judicious selection of photoinitiators and amines are discussed. Satd. resin systems discolor less than unsatd. resin systems when both are identically photoinitiated. Cumulative ranking clearly shows that the intensity of discoloration assocd. with photoinitiator choice decreases in the order: (most yellowing)-p-phenoxy-2,2-dichloroacetophenone [59867-68-4] > benzophenone [119-61-9] > 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone [24650-42-8] > 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenylpropanone [7473-98-5] > diethoxyacetophenone [64131-70-0] > a-hydroxycyclohexyl Ph ketone [947-19-3] - (least yellowing). The contribution of amines to the discoloration of cured films decreased in the order: hexamethyleneimine [111-49-9] > diethylamine [109-89-7] > methyldiethanolamine [105-59-9] in 18 out of 24 photoinitiator series.
