The gastric contents were recovered after 20 min. The vol. of the original meal recovered was assessed from the amt. of marker substance aspirated. The retardation of gastric emptying by amino acid hydrochlorides was consistent with their action as weak acids. However, tryptophan and phenylalanine were slightly more effective than predicted on the basis of their actions as acids.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) In 6 carcinogenicity bioassays, male and female F344 rats were fed diets contg. alanine-HCl [6003-05-0], p-chloraniline [106-47-8], azobenzene [103-33-3], o-toluidine-HCl [636-21-5], dapsone [80-08-0] or D and C red no. 9 [5160-02-1]. The rats, from 6 wk to 2 yr old, were given the compds. at 2 dose levels, the estd. max. tolerated dose and 1/2 that dose. In all 6 bioassays, dose-dependent incidences of splenic sarcomas and fibrosis were seen, with the highest incidences in male rats. Fibrosis occurred in the splenic parenchyma and(or) the capsule. Fatty infiltration also was seen in the spleen. Sarcomas appeared to arise in the splenic red pulp of splenic capsule, usually in assocn. with areas of parenchymal and capsular fibrosis and pigmentation. Larger tumors metastasized to the peritoneal cavity and abdominal organs. In some rats there was marked osseous metaplasia when the primary tumor metastasized to peritoneal surfaces. Other, less common, splenic neoplasms included hemangiosarcoma and hemangiopericytoma. Some rats had such extensive peritoneal involvement that the site or origin of their sarcoma was difficult to det.
