The kinetics of polymn. of I with diphenic acid (II) [482-05-3], diphenic anhydride [6050-13-1] and phthalic anhydride [85-44-9] were examd. Use of anhydrides instead of the dicarboxylic acids decreased the initial copolymn. temp. of I 60.degree. which was due to the formation of acid esters. The activation energy of polymn. decreased in the presence of Al2(SO4)3 from 23.7 to 11.9 kcal/mol and the order of the reaction decreased from 2.5 to 2.0. The change in the reaction order was related to an exclusion of the catalytic activity of the II protons.

BDI was easily prepd. from diphenic anhydride and 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol, followed by treatment with acrylic anhydride. BDI showed less efficiency on photoinitiation in the absence of erythritol triacrylate (ETA), but the photosensitivity improved dramatically in the presence of TEA. The photosensitivity of BDI was comparable to that of 2-methyl-4'-(methylthio)-2-morpholinopropiophenone and high thermal stability was more than 300°. .
