DOCUMENT TYPE: Conference CA Section: 16 (Fermentation and Bioindustrial Chemistry) A process was developed for total degrdn. of a sulfonated azo dye by anaerobic-aerobic treatment using the 6-aminonaphthalene-2-sulfonic acid (6A2NS)-degrading mixed bacterial culture. Reductive cleavage of the azo bond of Mordant Yellow 3 (MY3) yields 6A2NS and 5-aminosalicylate (5AS) which both are growth substrates for the 6A2NS-degrading mixed culture under aerobic conditions. Under aerobic conditions no decoloration of the azo dye was found. When the coculture was grown aerobically with 6A2NS and then incubated anaerobically in stoppered tubes a decoloration of the medium was obsd. The rate of MY3 turn-over under anaerobic conditions was greatly enhanced in the presence of glucose. The addn. of glucose (10mM) accelerated the turnover of MY3 (1mM) by a factor of about 10 to a maximal rate of 2.3mmol ′ h-1 mg protein-1. By high pressure liq. chromatog. (HPLC) it was shown that nearly equimolar amts. of 6A2NS and 5AS were formed from MY3. .
