DOCUMENT TYPE: Conference CA Section: 2 (Hormone Pharmacology) In amenorrheic women treated with chorionic gonadotropin (I) [9002-61-3] and menopausal gonadotropin [61489-71-2] mean estrogen excretion was 22 mg/24 h at the beginning of the treatment, 53 mg/24 h at the end of the latent phase, and 199 mg/24 h at the end of the active phase. Two days before I was given, the mean estrogen excretion was 140 mg/24 h. In comparison to this induced rise in estrogen excretion, the cervical secretion showed a spinnbarkeit of more than 5 cm in 93% and of less than 4 cm in 7% of the cases, 2 days before I administration. At the same time, ferning was optimal in 76, fair in 19, and neg. in 4%. On the day of I administration, when the estrogen excretion reached a mean of 199 mg/24 h, the spinnbarkeit was more than 5 cm in 91% and >4 cm in 9%; ferning was optimal in 78, fair in 17, and neg. in 5% of the patients examd. The postcoital test at this time was excellent only in 15, good in 30, but insufficient in 42 and even neg. in 12% of the patients.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Hormone Pharmacology) Ten infertile patients with polycystic ovarian disease were treated for 18 cycles with human pituitary FSH [9002-68-0] and for 10 cycles with human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) [61489-71-2]. Human chorionic gonadotropin [9002-61-3] was used to trigger ovulation when optimal follicular development was achieved as judged by urinary estrogen detns. Of the 18 cycles utilizing FSH, 14 were presumptively ovulatory, 2 were conceptual, and in 5 cycles ovarain enlargement was noted. Of the 10 HMG cycles, none was ovulatory, no conceptions resulted, and 6 instances of hyperstimulation were noted. Pretreatment serum LH [9002-67-9] levels were higher than normal follicular phase values. Endogenous LH levels in patients with polycystic ovaries are apparently quite adequate for follicular development so that the administration of exogenous LH is unwarranted. Furthermore, FSH or low-LH-contg. HMG may be an addnl. safe and effective nonsurgical treatment modality for patients who are anovulatory because of polycystic ovaries.
