DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 40 (Textiles) Chlorination of hydroquinone (I) [123-31-9] in a soln. or slurry contg. acetic acid [64-19-7] with SO2Cl2 at the SO2Cl2-I mol ratio 0.8-1.2 yields a mixt. contg. predominantly chlorohydroquinone (II) [615-67-8], which is acetylated, polycondensed with suitable monomers to give a polyester, and spun into fibers. Thus, 0.5 mol SO2Cl2 chlorinated 0.5 mol I in 500 mL acetic acid gave a mixt. contg. II 79.46, dichlorohydroquinone 12.88, and I 7.66%. A 13.32 g portion of this mixt. was treated with 40 mL Ac2O, refluxed, treated with 0.085 mol terephthalic acid and 0.03 mol 6-acetoxy-2-naphthoic acid, and heated to give, after removal of Ac2O and AcOH by distn., a polyester [90409-90-8] which was melt spun to fibers having (after heat treatment) tenacity 13.8 dN/tex, elongation 4.0%, and modulus 389 dN/tex.
