DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) D-mannose [3458-28-4] and Me .alpha.-D-mannopyranoside (I) [617-04-9] but not N-acetyl-D-glucosamine [7512-17-6] or D-galactose [59-23-4], reversibly inhibited adherence of E. coli K12 or B cells to human oral epithelial cells; inhibition by I was dose-related and linear in the range 2-6 mg sugar/mL. Binding of E. coli to epithelial cells is probably mediated by a mannose-specific lectin-like substance present on the bacterial cell surface which binds to a mannose-like receptor site on the mucosal cell.

The increase in Ca2+ uptake was obsd. 5 min after I addn. and was concn. dependent over a range of 2-400 mg I/mL. The effect was reversed completely by a-methyl mannopyranoside [617-04-9]. Succinyl I [55128-23-9] exhibited only a slight effect compared with native I. Ca2+ uptake was strongly dependent on energy metab. The uptake of CrO42- by thymocytes was also enhanced by I, but the effect of I on CrO42- permeability appeared to be independent of its effect on Ca2+ uptake.
