DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 38 (Elastomers, Including Natural Rubber) Poly[(.+-.)-epichlorohydrin] (I) [61630-87-3] of mol. wt. 7.1 .times. 105 (prepd. by polymn. of (.+-.)-epichlorohydrin in ether in presence of Et3Al) was modified by treatment with diethanolamine (II) [111-42-2] and triethanolamine (III) [102-71-6], iminodiacetic acid (IV) [142-73-4], and KOH in dioxane [123-91-1], HCONMe2 [68-12-2], and HCONEt2 [617-84-5], to obtain new polyelectrolytes. The degree of degrdn. of I depended on the nature of the nucleophilic reagent used and decreased in the order: KOH > III > IV > II. Among solvents used dioxane had the largest effect on degrdn.; HCONEt2, the least. No relation was found between degree of substitution and degree of degrdn.
