ISSN: 0016-9919. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Section cross-reference(s): 51 Rats were exposed to 2 anthracite samples of varying compns. (sample 1 contained 90% vitrinite and the 2nd sample contained 42% fusinite), for 4 h/d, 5 times/wk for 6 h. The animals showed no changes by the end of the 1st mo except in the lung lipids which were decreased. This was followed by the changes in the connective tissue elastins, which were primarily related to disruption in the respiratory function of the animals. The 1st sample contg. high amt. of vitrinite substantially increased the lipids and collagens, whereas the 2nd sample contg. fusinite increased total hydroxyproline [618-27-9] and increased argyrophilic fibers. The fibrogenic action of fusinite anthracite was quite strong. Biochem. and element compn. changes occurring under the effect of anthracite dust may be useful for studying the dust factor in the coal industry.
