DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) A combination of alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (benzalkonium chloride) in an aq. diln. of 1/1000 and propylene glycol-b-Ph ether (propylene-phenoxetol) [6180-61-6] 1/100 in the same soln. exhibited strong bactericidal effects on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus faecalis at 22°, esp. in the presence of 20% and 50% normal horse serum. The effects do not appear to be reduced by the pptn. which occurs when serum is admixed. The test fungi, Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus, were also very susceptible to the combination alone or with horse serum added. The combination may be suitable as a hospital disinfectant.
