This was accomplished by administering the parasympathomimetic drugs methacholine chloride [62-51-1] (0.2 mg/kg, s.c.), 2-deoxy-D-glucose [154-17-6] (100 mg/kg, i.v.), the parasympatholytic drug atropine [51-55-8] (0.2 mg/kg, i.v.), the sympathomimetic agent epinephrine [51-43-4] (2.5 .mu.g/kg, i.v.), and the beta adrenergic blocker propanolol-HCl [318-98-9] (0.5 mg/kg, i.v.); and then measuring cardiac output, stroke vol., heart rate, mean arterial pressure, pulse pressure, central venous pressure, total peripheral resistance PaCO2, PaO2, pH, and base deficit. Cardiovascular responses to the administration of the parasympathomimetic drugs, methacholine and 2-deoxy-D-glucose, or the parasympatholytic drug, atropine, were similar to those obsd. in normal dogs. Cardiovascular responses to the administration of the sympathomimetic drug epinephrine and the sympatholytic drug propanolol or beta blocker were also consistent with those obsd. in normal dogs. Thus, parasympathetic and sympathetic innervations to the cardiovascular system are present in dogs with achalasia of the esophagus. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Hormone Pharmacology) Iontophoretically applied acetylcholine chloride (I) [60-31-1] (0.2M), methacholine chloride [62-51-1] (0.2M), or carbamylcholine chloride [51-83-2] (0.1M) excited neurons in both the medial and lateral vestibular nuclei of cats with midcollicular decerebration and the cerebellum removed, whereas histamine [51-45-6] markedly inhibited the majority of cells, though it did excite several of them. I-induced excitation was potentiated by physostigmine sulfate (0.2M) and blocked in vestibular cells by atropine sulfate (0.2M) without altering the response of these cells to Na glutamate. Histamine inhibition was blocked by the H2 antagonist, metiamide (0.1M), without I excitation being affected, but the H1 antagonist, diphenhydramine-HCl (0.2M) had no effect. I and histamine produced similar responses in neurons modulated by motion and in those not affected by it. The vestibular cells, therefore, possess both muscarinic cholinergic receptors and H2 histaminergic receptors. .
