II was prepd. from biphenyl III in several steps in an overall yield of 53% using std. methods. The above group exhibits properties similar to those of the 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl group; it is stable to acid and can be cleaved by 15% piperidine in DMF. Thus, II was esterified with 2,4,5-Cl3C6H2OH (TcpOH) by DCC to give I (R = Tcp, R1 = H), which was condensed with Boc-Val-OH (Boc = Me3CO2C) by DCC to give I (R = Tcp, R1 = Boc-Val), which was coupled with H-Gly-NHCH2Q (Q = styrene-2%-divinylbenzene copolymer) to give polymer-bound deriv. IV. IV was used in the stepwise synthesis of H-Leu-Ala-Gly-Val-OH.
