I [69634-65-7], known from the patent EP-OS 0 000 112, unexpected showed plant growth-retarding activity which abolishes apical dominance and enhances tillering. Thus, spraying barley grown in the greenhouse to the 2-leaves stage, with 0.05% I, inhibited the longitudinal growth by 93%, induced a dark green color, and stimulated tillering. Floating disks from soybean leaves on 0.001% I increased 6.9-fold the ethylene [74-85-1] formation. I was synthesized by reacting 1-chloro-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)ethane [63398-55-0] with 4-chlorobenzylmercaptan [6258-66-8] in presence of NaOH.

Four of them were 4-chlorobenzaldehyde [104-88-1], 4-chlorobenzyl alc. [873-76-7], 4-chlorobenzyl N-ethylthiocarbamate [39918-94-0], and 4-chlorobenzyl mercaptan [6258-66-8]. Photodecompn. of DCPA (II) [1861-32-1] for 2 h yielded Me tetrachloroterephthalate [887-54-7] and tetrachloroterephthalic acid [2136-79-0], whereas 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene [95-94-3] was found after 4 h. The rate of I degrdn. in flooded soil samples increased with increasing org. matter content. Autoclaving the soil retarded the I degrdn. II was degraded in flooded soils within 20 days, but persisted in air-dry soils.
