Thus, I (>99% pure, 0.5 Kmole/h) at 170° and a Cl-HCl-N mixt. (11 Kmole/h, 15 mol Cl/mol I) at 250° were fed to a grid under a bed of activated C to fluidize the C. Part of the heat of reaction was removed from the bed to limit the temp. to ~350°. The product gas was filtered and cooled to 40° to recover II (0.49 Kmole/h, 98.5% pure). Part of the uncondensed gas was recycled, and part was treated to recover Cl and HCl.

The vol. of the gas stream was reduced to 1,4-800 ft3/h contg. I 76, II 0.24, III 15, CO2 25, CO 130, N 870, and water 38 lb/h. The gas was then treated in an absorber with I (and optional) to give a gas contg. <10 ppm II and III. To prevent salting out of NH4 carbonate and the chilling system, 100 lb/process water/h was injected before the gas was chilled to 2°. At a I cost of $0.36/lb, the I recovery by chilling would amt. to $204, 000/yr. The amt. of nitrile left in the gas was <1 ppm.
