- Method for neutralizing acidic components in petroleum refining units using an alkoxyalkylamine. White, James A.; Maynard, Thomas C. (Nalco Chemical Co., USA). U.S. US 4062764 13 Dec 1977, 7 pp. (English). (United States of America). CODEN: USXXAM. CLASS: IC: C10G007-00. NCL: 208348000. APPLICATION: US 76-709347 28 Jul 1976. DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 51 (Fossil Fuels, Derivatives, and Related Products) Section cross-reference(s): 48 Acidic compds. formed during the operation of petroleum distn. units are meutralized by adding alkoxyalkylamines of the type RO(CH2)mNH2 (R = C£4 alkyl, n = 2 or 3). Acid corrosion at the point of initial H2O condensation is eliminated, and the amines function without forming deposits when the app. is used for protracted periods of time. Thus, methoxypropylamine (I) [5332-73-0] and other neutralizing amines were tested for their ability to prevent initial condensate corrosion without forming deposits in the distn. of naphtha in a lab. distn. unit. A dil. aq. HCl soln. was flashed and injected into the top section of the reboiler, and the amine neutralizer was fed into the reflux line to neutralize the acid vapor coming up the column. Deposit formation was obsd. visually and by anal. of the charge and effluent streams for Cl-. I neutralized the acid without forming deposits, whereas deposits were obsd. with all the other tested amines (e.g., morpholine, hexamethylenediamine, diaminocyclohexane). Methoxyethylamine [109-85-3] and ethoxypropylamine [6291-85-6] are also alkoxyalkylamines that meet the requirements of the invention.
