Na valproate [1069-66-5] (50 and 100 mg/kg), Mg valproate [62959-43-7] (100 mg/kg) and dipropylacetamide [2430-27-5] (100 mg/kg) were administered i.p. 1 h prior to the behavioral test (shuttle-box, single session). Acquisition of active avoidance behavior was facilitated by Na valproate, unaffected by Mg valproate, and inhibited by dipropylacetamide. Thus, behavioral effects of valproic acid derivs. cannot be explained only in terms of a general inhibitory action on the central nervous system.
