DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) An acidic dye, Brilliant Scarlet 3R (I) [2611-82-7] did not penetrate films of plasma-deposited polymethane (II) [27936-85-2] on nylon 6 [25038-54-4] when the I layer faced the dye soln., but penetrated from the backside. When the dye soln. was placed on the uncoated side of the film, the diffusion const. was 90% of that of the uncoated film. Thus, the plasma-deposited II film acts as an efficient permeation valve for transport of I. With a neutral dispersion dye, Celliton Fast Yellow 5R (III) [6300-37-4], much less 2-sided diffusion was obsd. The vectored diffusion property, expressed as the ratio of D(backside)/D(front side) is ~2 for III and infinite for I. .

Disperse Yellow 7 [6300-37-4] by solvent-treated isotactic polypropylene (I) [25085-53-4] films with increasing crystallinity is ascribed to an enhanced sorption in the amorphous side region located parallel to the mol. axis between cryst. cores. The solvent treatments removed atactic fractions and low mol. wt. isotactic components from the original films. A conformational change of the I chains in the side region occurred by the solvent treatment. This means that a long rod-like mol. of dye is easily absorbed in the polymer chain aligned nearly straight in this region.
