Chlorinated paraffins are degraded in sediments, the rate of degrdn. is higher under anaerobic than under aerobic conditions, and prepns. contg. 70% degraded more than those with 40% Cl. The anal. method detected only the unchanged residual chlorinated paraffins, and not more-polar degrdn. products. It is concluded that chlorinated paraffins contaminate the environment to the degree encounted with polychlorinated biphenyl. .
