DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 80 (Organic Analytical Chemistry) Section cross-reference(s): 72, 79 A liq. membrane electrode that is sensitive and reasonably selective for the periodate ion is described.Some commonly used reagents like 636-99-7 and 57-48-7 are used in this experiment. It incorporates a nitrobenzene soln. of nitron-periodates as an ion-exchange site. The electrode displays a near-Nernstian response for 10-5-10-2M periodate with an anionic slope of 55 mV (concn. decade)-1. The potential response is fast (<1 min) and almost independent of pH over the range 3-7. Selectivity coeff. data for 30 inorg. and org. anions show negligible interferences from most common anions. The electrode was used satisfactorily for the direct detn. of 0.01-2.5 mg mL-1 of periodate with an av. recovery of 98.9% and a mean std. deviation of 1.4%. Some a-diols, reducing carbohydrates and hydrazines at concns. of 0.05-2.5 mg mL-1 were detd. by reaction with periodate under controlled conditions followed by measurements of the excess of the reagent. An av. recovery of 98.2% and a mean std. deviation of 1.7% were obtained. .
