- Vibrational study on ferroelectric dipoles in Rochelle salt
- Vibrational study on ferroelectric dipoles in Rochelle salt. Kanesaka, Isao; Kita, Hayato (Fac. Sci., Toyama Univ., Toyama 930, Japan). J. Raman Spectrosc., 22(11), 657-61 (English) 1991. CODEN: JRSPAF. ISSN: 0377-0486. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 73 (Optical, Electron, and Mass Spectroscopy and Other Related Properties) Complete polarized Raman spectra in the region of O-D stretchings in a partially deuterated Rochelle salt were obsd. at room temp. and 77 K. The spectra were analyzed by comparison with calcd. intensity variations, identifying some bands definitely and deducing a ferroelec. dipole with a 2-site structure, where the O-D stretchings are 2520 and 2424 cm-1 at room temp. The IR spectra in the region of O-D stretchings and also O-H decoupled stretchings were obsd. in the temp. range 310-20 K. One of two components in the ferroelec. dipole at 2507 cm-1 was obsd. even at 20 K, indicating a small energy difference between the 2 sites. No important spectral change at 2507 cm-1 was found on passing through the ferroelec. phase transition. An O-H group with a 2-site structure with an energy difference of 2.4 kJ mol-1 was obsd.In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 7782-39-0 and 6381-59-5 for the 1st time at 3536 and 3523 cm-1 at 240 K, although the corresponding O-D stretching was not split. This group is not responsible for ferroelectricity. .
