The cationic cellulose is added to cosmetics at 0.1-3% by wt. Powd. spruce cellulose (1 mol anhydroglucose units) was dispersed in Me2CO and aq. NaOH (2.1 mol) was added gradually at 20°, after 20 min. The suspension was heated at 60° and glycidol (3.0 mol) was added. Fifteen minutes later 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride [3327-22-8] (1.2 mol) was added and the mixt. was refluxed 4 h at 60° with stirring. The product was filtered and washed with aq. Me2CO. A hair conditioner contained: C16-18 fatty alcs. 2, ethoxylated castor oil 1, ethoxylated cetyloleyl alc. 0.5, glyceryl monopalmitate-glyceryl monostearate 1.5, 30% cetyltrimethylammonium chloride 2, hydroxyethyl cellulose 0.5, the prepd. cationic cellulose 1.5, and H2O, fragrance, and preservatives 91% by wt.
