D-Aspartate was found in several species in concns. approaching those of L-aspartate . D-Alanine was detected, particularly in lucinid and vesicomyid clams, at levels exceeding manyfold those of L-alanine. D-Valine was absent in all cases. A test of a hydrolyzate of bulk sol. proteins of Lucinoma aequizonata, a spieces characterized by extremely high levels of D-alanine, showed no major incorporation of D-alanine into proteins. The implications of these results, for previously published anal. data and for human nutrition are discussed.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 13 (Mammalian Biochemistry) The effects of D-valine on the cell culture of bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells were studied using D-valine-modified Minimal Essential Medium (MEM). D-Valine-treated cultures (46-920 mg/L) were compared with replicate cells grown in L-valine (46 mg/L)-MEM. All media were supplemented with 15% fetal bovine serum. Endothelial cells were grown for 14 passages with split ratios varying from 1:3 to 1:6. 58-82-2 and 363-24-6 which are cas registry numbers of substances are two of reagents here. Unlike cells grown in L-valine MEM, cells grown in D-valine MEM did not become contaminated by the growth of fibroblasts in primary cultures. D-Valine-treated cells grew in cobblestone array, exhibited contact inhibition, and strongly expressed factor VIII antigen. D-Valine-grown cells produced PGI2 in greater proportion to PGE2, both constitutively and when stimulated by bradykinin, in comparison with cells grown in L-valine. In addn., cells grown in L-valine, although able to express factor VIII, were not comparable to D-valine cells with respect to other parameters assayed (morphol. and growth as a monolayer). .
