Triplet sensitized reactions of some main chain liquid crystalline polyaryl cinnamates
Triplet sensitized reactions of some main chain liquid crystalline polyaryl cinnamates. Subramanian, Petharnan; Creed, David; Hoyle, Charles E.; Venkataram, Krishnan (Dep. Chem. Biochem., Univ. South. Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS 39406-5043, USA). Proc. SPIE-Int. Soc. Opt. Eng., 1559(Photopolym. Device Phys., Chem., Appl. 2), 461-9 (English) 1991. CODEN: PSISDG. ISSN: 0277-786X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 74 (Radiation Chemistry, Photochemistry, and Photographic and Other Reprographic Processes) Thin films of a liq. cryst. polyaryl cinnamate were irradiated at l > 400 nm in the presence of ketocoumarin triplet sensitizers. The aryl cinnamate chromophore disappears upon irradn. with concomitant loss of soly. attributed to crosslinking by inter-chain cyclobutane photoproduct formation. Competing loss of sensitizer absorption also occurs during irradn. Up to ~80% of the aryl cinnamate chromophores in amorphous films can be destroyed using high wt. percentages (35%) of sensitizer. 63226-13-1 and 64267-17-0 which are cas registry numbers of substances are two of reagents here. At low concn. of sensitizer (0.5 wt.%) ~80 cinnamate chromophores are photolyzed for each sensitizer mol. initially present, despite the competing photolysis of sensitizer during the course of irradn. The ketocoumarins are insol. in the glassy (frozen) nematic films of the polymer and thus are ineffective in sensitizing photolysis in this more organized phase. .
