DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 8 (Radiation Biochemistry) The incidence of major ECG changes, particularly ventricular fibrillation, was evaluated in rabbits during prolonged, selective right coronary injection of Na/meglumine ioxaglate (Hexabrix 160) and iohexol (Omnipaque 140), 2 isotonic contrast media. The anesthetized animals each received 1.5 mL of contrast material, delivered at a rate of 3 mL/min. Both contrast media caused major ECG changes, which were reversible within seconds after administration. No fibrillation occurred with ioxaglate, but ventricular fibrillation was seen in 7 animals given iohexol. There was a significant difference in the incidence of ventricular fibrillation between the contrast media. Both test solns. induced transient, more or less marked bradycardia, but without significant differences. 66108-95-0 and 59017-64-0 which are cas registry numbers of substances are two of reagents here. The intracoronary injections produced similar decreases in blood pressure for both contrast agents. Reactive hypertensive was obsd. only in those animals in which an episode of fibrillation occurred with iohexol. The causes underlying these effects are analyzed for both contrast agents. .

The contrast media used were meglumine sodium diatrizoate, iohexol, iopamidol, and meglumine sodium ioxaglate. Blood samples were collected from the coronary sinus before and 5, 15, and 30 s after the 1st injection of contrast medium into the left coronary artery. Diatrizoate produced the greatest changes in both hematocrit and ionized Ca. The time concn. curve of hematocrit was similar for all 4 contrast media, but diatrizoate and ioxaglate produced a prolonged decrease in ionized Ca. Thus, nonionic low-osmolality contrast media with added Ca may be preferable for coronary arteriog. with respect to maintenance of the ionized Ca level. .
