- Acute toxicity of phosphate ester mixtures to invertebrates and fish. Nevins, Michael J.; Johnson, W. Waynon (Fish-Pestic. Res. Lab., U. S. Fish Wildl. Serv., Columbia, Mo., USA). Bull. Environ. Contam. Toxicol., 19(2), 250-6 (English) 1978. CODEN: BECTA6. ISSN: 0007-4861. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Of 3 phosphate ester hydraulic fluids tested, Pydraul 50E [66594-31-8] was most toxic to fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), and bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus) in both the static and flow-through tests; Houghtosafe 1120 [12797-87-4] was less toxic than Pydraul 50E, and Pydraul 115E [66594-32-9] was the least toxic. Scuds (Gammarus pseudolimnaeus) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were the most sensitive species tested to these phosphate esters, whereas crayfish (Orconectes nais) was most resistant. Sublethal reactions to Pydraul 50E and Houghtosafe 1120 included loss of appetite, hypersensitivity to disturbance, hemorrhagic areas around dorsal fins, and impaired swimming ability. The time-independent median lethal concn. (TILC50) data indicated that concns. of 30.25 mg hydraulic fluid/L are harmful to fish. The phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, however, were less toxic than polychlorinated biphenyls.
