(5 mg/mL). Nitrofurans had a damaging effect on the membrane structure of the microorganisms under growing conditions. Solafur was the most active probably due to its water soly., and thus penetration into the bacterial cells. Nitrofurans inhibited the biosynthesis of membrane proteins, among them cytochromes, and decreased the activities of NADH [9079-67-8], malate- [9001-64-3], and lactate dehydrogenase [9001-60-9]. However, no cell death was obsd, the bacteria being adapted to a lower energy level. In a related study, cells grown in the presence of solafur, I, and furacrylin the cocci showed cytol. changes.
