The process produces the sought-for para-amino compd. in good yield and with high current efficiency and is advantageous as an industrial process. The electrochem. redn. is conducted at 10-70° in a filterpress-type electrolytic all which contains cathodic and anodic chambers sepd. by a diaphragm (e.g. Nafion 315). The initial catholyte soln., in an example, contains p-nitrobenzoylglutamic acid 2.8, NaCl 2, and HCl 6 g, in 300 mL at pH 0.7. The electrolyte flow rate was 15 cm/s and the electrochem. redn. was carried out for 17 h. The p-aminobenzoylglutamic acid was produced in 99.0% of theor. yield at a current efficiency of 88.3%. .
