DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 36 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (I) is polymd. in the presence of Sb2O3, 10-3-5 x 10-2 mol% (based on I) CoCl2 or Co carboxylates, and >0.5 x 10-3 mol% (based on I) Me3PO [676-96-0] or Ph3PO [791-28-6] (the molar P-Co ratio > 0.5) to give transparent poly(ethylene terephthalate) (II) [25038-59-9] having good brightness. Thus, a mixt. of I 1, Pb(OAc)2 10-4, Sb2O3 2 x 10-4, CoCl2 10-4, and Me3PO 2 x 10-4 mol was heated, gradually evacuated, and kept 1.5 h at 275° and 0.1 mm to give II with good transparency, having intrinsic viscosity 0.70 (20°, PhOH-C2H2Cl4), terminal CO2H content 14.8 equiv./ton, and color b value -6.2, compared with poor transparency, 0.68, 17.6, and -0.3, resp., for a similar II prepd. by heating 2 h at 275° and 0.1 mm without CoCl2 and Me3PO.
