DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 57 (Ceramics) A MeOH-H2O soln. of Si(OMe)4 [681-84-5] (pH 9.5-10.5) is hydrolyzed for gelation in a 1:0.5-9 (molar ratio) mixt. atm. of H2O and MeOH to give a porous SiO2 gel which is thermally sintered to give SiO2 glass. The method makes it possible to manuf. a large mass of transparent and homogeneous SiO2 glass at low cost. Thus, an aq. soln. (pH 10.2) contg. Si(OMe)4, MeOH, and ammonia water was agitated for 1 h at 50°, enclosed in a glass vessel, solidified, treated in 1:1 molar ratio MeOH and H2O atm., and dried. The dried gel was sintered for 3 days (to 1200°) to give transparent SiO2 glass.
