DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Section cross-reference(s): 13 The mitochondrial inhibitors nonactin [6833-84-7], dinitrophenol [51-28-5], oligomycin [1404-19-9], and NaN3 [26628-22-8] were tested in neuroblastoma cells. Their effects on the mitochondrial proteins and some cytoskeletal proteins were compared to those of 1-methylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CCA) (I) [1123-25-7], a differentiation inducer known for its antianoxic effect on the brain. The changes in the synthetic rates of mitochondrial or cytoskeletal and assocd. proteins depended on the type of antimitochondrial agent used, indicating that these changes cannot be related just to ATP depletion (or arrest of cell division), and thus alteration of the electrochem. gradient does not affect only mitochondrial functions. I appeared to affect the protein formation in a way similar to oligomycin. The comparison favors the hypothesis that the primary mechanism of CCA induction is an alteration of the electrochem. gradient.
