The variations in isooctanoic acid isomer compn. in the com. product had no noticeable effect on the cosmetic properties of a given ester. Thus, isooctanoic acid was esterified with MeOH, 2-ethylhexanol [104-76-7], 3,5,5-trimethylhexanol [3452-97-9] isodecanol [25339-17-7], isotridecanol [27458-92-0] or isooctadecanol [27458-93-1] in toluene soln. contg. H2SO4, and the product was neutralized, washed, and distd. The isomer compn. of Me isooctanoate [68517-10-2] and 2-ethylhexyl isooctanoate [81897-25-8] was detd. by gas chromatog., and the mass spectra of the major isomers of the latter are given. The horizontal spreadability on filter paper of the esters exceeded that of paraffin oil and that of a com. straight-chain aliph. 2-ethylhexanoate, and decreased in the order: 2-ethylhexyl ester, isodecyl isooctanoate [89933-26-6], isotridecyl isooctanoate [89933-27-7], 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl isooctanoate [89933-28-8], and isooctadecyl isooctanoate [41669-30-1]. Formulations are given for a sunscreen, face cream, and ointment base contg. the esters. .
