DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Study of natural weathering of suspension PVC [9002-86-2] showed that the presence of Ba stearate [6865-35-6], Ca stearate [1592-23-0], Cd stearate (I) [2223-93-0], and Zn stearate [557-05-1] (5.0 ′ 10-3 mol/100 g PVC) suppressed CO evolution during the initial weathering stages but promoted CO evolution during prolonged weathering, compared to pure PVC. However, evolution of CO was lower for stearate-contg. PVC than for pure PVC during accelerated weathering at 35 ± 1° and 300-385 nm. In both cases, I exhibited the highest stabilizing effect. Rate of consumption of the stearates in PVC due to reaction with HCl evolved from the samples depended on the type of stearate and weathering mode but I was again the most effective stabilizer. The differences in the results obtained in natural and accelerated weathering expts. were explained by significant differences in the weathering conditions.

Thus, a maleic acid resin 18.5, NaOH 2.9, and water 78.6 parts were heated at 80.degree. for 30 min, mixed (25 parts) with 100 parts rutile and 50 parts water, heated at 80.degree. for 1 h, mixed with 25 parts 5% aq. CaCl2 and 75 parts water, heated at 80.degree. for 1 h to prep. I-treated Ti oxide, mixed (60 parts) with a safflower oil-modified alkyd resin 30, Mn naphthenate 0.1, and a solvent 10 parts, printed on a tin plate, coated immediately with an acrylic finish, and dried.
