DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 64 (Pharmaceutical Analysis) Section cross-reference(s): 9, 63 Five quaternary protoberberine alkaloids, berberine (I) [2086-83-1], coptisine (II) [3486-66-6] epiberberine (III) [6873-09-2], palmatine (IV) [3486-67-7] and berberastine (V) [2435-73-6] were detd. in exts. of Coptis rhizome samples from Japan, China and other countries by TLC-densitometry. Benzene-AcOEt-PrOH-MeOH-EtNH2 (8:4:2:0.5:0.5) was used as the developing solvent. The Japanese samples contained 7-9% I, 0.4-0.6% each of II and IV and negligible amts. of V. Chinese samples contained I 4-5, II 1.5-1.8, IV 1-3 and III 1-2%. Alkaloid contents in other samples were similar to those of Japanese samples. Thus I is the major alkaloid in all the samples.

These compds., except for groenlandicine, are reported for the first time from Coptis species. .
